Based upon official records, contemporary newspapers, and local oral history, this study presents a scholarly and accessible account of the contributions of generations of men and women of Aghada in the struggle for Irish independence. Commencing with the United Irish rebellion of 1798, the Fenians and the Land War, its main focus is on the Irish revolutionary period following the 1916 Easter Rising. It demonstrates how – in a parish dominated by Fort Carlisle and a British Naval tradition – a lightly armed Company of eighty-six Volunteers, backed up by the women of Cumann na mBan, outmanoeuvred powerful Crown forces into a position of ineffectiveness and ultimate stalemate. This local study provides the reader with a compelling insight into the Irish War of Independence in microcosm. The book concludes with the impact of a bitter Civil War of 1922-3 on the parish.
