For Something Better
In Memory of William (Liam) McGregor
Published by East Wall History Group
On the 23rd of September 1938 two Dublin men, Liam 'Willie' McGregor and John 'Jack' Nalty became the last Irishmen to die in the Spanish anti-fascist war.
Liam McGregor was one of six volunteers from the Inchicore area who served in the International Brigade, part of that 'comradeship of heroes' from across the world who journeyed to defend the Spanish Republic and to oppose the rise of fascism. Along with his comrade Jack Nalty, from East Wall, he would tragically die on the very last day of engagement of the International Brigade, which was being withdrawn from frontline combat.
This booklet tells the story of Liam McGregor using letters, documents and memories kindly shared by the McGregor family. None of this material has previously been in the public realm and is a fascinating insight into Liam, his family and the politics of the era.
Published to commemorate the 85th anniversary of his death.
