In this book Bob Doyle (1916–2009) gives an account of his childhood in Dublin, his poverty and
cruel detention in orphanages, his early working life,
his membership of the Republican Congress and the
Communist Party of Ireland, his participation in
pitched battles against the Blueshirts, and then in
1937 his secret journey to Spain to take part in the
war in defence of the Spanish Republic, during which he was captured, imprisoned, and tortured.
On his release in a prisoner exchange he obtained work as a seaman during the Second World War and later returned to Spain to take part in the illegal workers’ movement and the anti-fascist underground.
Eventually settling in London, he
obtained work in the printing industry, becoming a militant union leader as well as a campaigner for numerous progressive causes, including housing,
health, anti-racism, and international solidarity.
This is a lively, modest and sometimes humorous account of a life of hardship, struggle, and uncompromising principles.
